rshapiro@willomd.com
Dr. Shapiro, Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine, practices Nephrology, Internal Medicine, and Integrative Medicine. After receiving an M.D. degree from Ohio State University and completing his post graduate training, Dr. Shapiro served 10 years on the full-time faculty of the Medical College of Ohio. He established the Tissue Typing Laboratory and together with kidney Transplant Surgeons developed the renal transplant program. This resulted in the first and only full spectrum diagnostic and therapeutic tertiary renal care in Northwest Ohio. It was apparent to him that there were painful and debilitating conditions that were not being satisfactorily resolved in spite of the vast diagnostic and therapeutic resources of traditional medicine.
Dr. Shapiro began searching for additional safe and effective tools to treat pain in patients who could not tolerate traditional therapy or who were unable to obtain relief. He earned a Ph.D. degree in acupuncture after studying in Canada, Europe and The United States. This became an invaluable complementary modality to help relieve pain in his patients. A demanding nephrology practice compelled him to explore and develop pain relief modalities with faster time frame than the traditional needling approach. A number of techniques have been developed, as well as pain relief and healing devices in association with Physician’s Technology, LLC.
In addition to his clinical faculty position at the University of Toledo College of Medicine, he is Director of Medical Education at St. Anne Mercy Hospital and Director of the Interval Pain Service in the Emergency Department of St. Anne Mercy Hospital.
